Description
The "Sacred Cenote" at Chichen Itza, Mexico. The Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza are beautiful despite the historical reality of human sacrifice -- the Sacred Cenote, or "well," was indeed the site of human sacrifices. The Mayans believed the Cenote was an entrance to the Underworld. Archaeologists have recovered human remains, jewelry, and other sacrificial artifacts from the well. Today, the Cenote is a peaceful place, a far cry from its dark past.
