Description
Waiting For My Second Line 36x36
Waiting For My Second Line represents my perspective on death. I love the ideas behind New Orleans-style Second Lines, and the spirit of the Second Line sort of epitomizes how I view death. The Second Line celebration is a reminder to the living that even in death there is rejoicing; the deceased has left the pain of this life. The truth of Proverbs 14:13 rings true: "Even in laughter the heart may be in pain / And the end of joy may be grief." Historically, as funeral attendees would begin to break up, some of the Main Line (funeral processional) musicians join others to start the Second Line band ~ they strike up an upbeat tempo and the music invites the crowd to participate. People wave their handkerchiefs, originally carried due to grief ~ now they are waved joyously in the air. Umbrellas initially carried for protection from the sun now become a festive symbol, moved up and down like dance props carried aloft. Exuberance is the key sensation within the parade of Second Liners, influencing people to randomly join in the parade celebration as it leaves the cemetery and winds its way through the streets. The happiness within the crowd of Second Liners is a time of elation for mourners that helps them through difficult days of grief to come. Nowadays the Second Line has evolved to be a notable piece of modern New Orleans. If you've been to a Southern wedding or walked on the streets of New Orleans, then it is likely you've seen or been part of a Second Line parade, complete with a brass band, handkerchiefs, and umbrellas. Second Lines are used to celebrate almost any event in New Orleans. So, I don't see death as an end or a bad thing ~ I'm just waiting for my Second Line, my celebration parade! As they say in New Orleans ~ Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Let the good times roll!)
