Description
Roses For Remembrance
. . . the fall will probably kill you.
~ Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
(1969)
When the fall doesn’t kill you,
it knocks you flat;
flat out of breath,
flat out of life,
all five senses dead,
only the sixth one
remains.
Into that void
they come to you,
unbidden yet welcome;
ghosts and guilts,
burning-raw wounds,
as if filled with self-rubbing salt,
and fresh.
Time dries up,
becoming an alchemy
of memories and pain;
you can’t gasp or cry
yet feel the cosmic cry
gasping: please please
forgive.
Prison-bars for guilt,
for every little thing
you wish you could
do differently,
say differently,
but Time, dried up,
is gone.
Shadows for ghosts,
gray the ones who
betrayed you,
blue the ones who
carried you;
they slide in, across, and through;
beloved.
You breathe again,
you see them dancing;
your ghosts and guilts,
calling you to join them,
but the fall didn’t kill you,
so you wash away
the salt.
Always you see,
always you taste,
always you hear,
always you smell,
always you touch,
always you feel them
within.
Roses for remembrance.
